Everest Base Camp is one of the most favourite hiking trails in the world. Everest is a dream of every mountaineer to step on the highest peak in the world. To reach 8,848 MASL is not an easy hike. There are dozens of them, such as famous Scott Eugene Fischer, Rob Hall, until the unnamed ones.
To Everest, even to any mountain in the world, no one is special, everyone is the same in the mountain, everybody should come to climb with pure light heart and respect. Everest and all mountain in the world have their own right to choose who can step on its peak.
Climbing cost to the peak of Everest is around USD 85,000. It is the highest cost of climbing 7 summits of the world. It is not a joke. Mostly it is well-known as the most legal suicide place in the world considering many people failed and died due to altitude sickness, cerebral edema, hypothermia. Also now Nepal government requires certain term and condition to any mountaineer who would like to climb to the peak ; everyone should at least has climbing certificates of about 5 mountain in Himalayan range above 6,000 MASL
Since not everyone has the same endurance and money to climb to the peak of Everest, though it is still the most favourite hiking trail in the world. And many people are now taking the chance to hike to the Base Camp of Everest as it is a great chance to feel the air of Himalaya and seeing climbers who are about going to attempt, see how they stay in the base camp for preparation and acclimatisation. It is about 7 days of ascending from Lukla to the Base Camp and 3 days descending. Passing beautiful and changing sceneries every single day, getting engaged with the locals, beautiful people and very polite.
The journey to the Everest Base Camp starts from Kathmandu on the first day arrival in Nepal, normally you will take one overnight to prepare and rest, second day, morning flight you may take from domestic airport Tribhuvan to Lukla by twin otter plane with maximum 16 passengers of course plus cabin crew, pilot and co-pilot. Dramatic scenery all the way in the air, snow-capped mountains until the landing at Tenzing Hillary airport – Lukla.
Once you are in Lukla, you will be resting awhile for an hour before continuing trekking about 3 – 4 hours to Phakding as the first stop to stay overnight. Trek to Phakding is quite easy, it is more or less you are going down passing by villages through stairs. From 2,860 to 2,652 MASL.
The next day from Phakding you are heading to Namche Bazaar, the trek starts quite challenging. First hours you will pass up and down tiny hills and passing many bridges over beautiful blue rivers. Then you will start ascending steep hill and you will see the famous suspension bridge that you always see in the movie and documentaries. The bridge is connecting you to Namche Bazaar. That quite long bridge, and after about 2 hours normal speed, steep terrain until finally you will be in Namche Bazaar. Then you will stay 2 nights for acclimatization.
Acclimatisation day, you will hike to the hill to see Everest view point 3,780 MASL. At the point of clear day you will see mostly south side of Himalayan range, including Ama Dablam, Lhotse and Everest itself. After you may walk around back to Namche Bazaar via Khumjung village, a small village and they have blue roof on every house in the village. In small village, there is Khumjung – Hillary school. Spending time in Everest Base Camp 5,380 MASL is such an amazing experience.
